Ten Days of Prayer
14th - 23rd May 2026
Abide and Advance!
John 15:4
Abide in me, and I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit by itself, unless it abides in the vine, neither can you, unless you abide in me. (ESV)
John 15:16
You did not choose me, but I chose you and appointed you that you should go and bear fruit and that your fruit should abide, so that whatever you ask the Father in my name, he may give it to you. (ESV)
To abide in Christ is to continue in a daily, personal relationship with him. This is characterised by trust, prayer, worship, obedience, joy and being in the word. Then Jesus says that if we abide in him, he is able to abide in us. We need to intentionally safeguard our relationship with Jesus so that he can continue to abide fully in us. We cannot bear fruit unless we abide!
The term “fruit”; in the gospels can be taken to be the fruit of the Spirit, but often it refers to the making new disciples. In John 4:35- 36 Jesus says, “Do not say, ‘There are yet four months and then comes the harvest. I tell you lift up your eyes and see how the fields are already white for harvest. He who reaps receives wages and gathers fruit for eternal life so that sower and reaper may rejoice together.” At that time the whole town was coming to him (Jn 4v30) so Jesus may have been referring to this crowd of people coming to meet with him and “Fruit for eternal life” would have meant new disciples. So if Jesus says that we should go and bear fruit, and that your fruit should abide this would refer, then, to the fruitfulness of winning others to Christ, who themselves would abide in Christ and be fruitful!
As we come into these Ten Days of Prayer let us have times of abiding, listening to the leading of the Holy Spirit, and allowing God to speak into our lives and the church. Let us pray also for fruitfulness and for the advance of the gospel in our communities, and to the nations.
May God lead and guide us over these Ten Days of Prayer, and may he be glorified in all that we do.
